Putting Communities First.
What is Communities First?
Communities First is a unique caucus of like-minded individuals committed to independently representing our constituents. We prioritize community interests above all, distinguishing ourselves from traditional political parties.
Core Principle
We believe that elected members of City Council must be free to vote according to their understanding of constituents’ views, regardless of party.

Independence from Party Affiliations
Communities First is not affiliated with any provincial or federal party. We are a “party” by necessity, formed in response to the provincial government’s introduction of political parties into municipal politics.

Shared Policy Priorities
Being Responsible & Accountable to Citizens
Council members are here to represent constituents, not rule over them. Engagement should prioritize listening over lecturing.
Running an Efficient & Effective City
Keep taxes and fees affordable through transparent budgeting and provide effective oversight of City administration.
Getting Back to Basics
Focus on municipal responsibilities and deliver services effectively and affordably. Engage with other orders of government for shared responsibilities, ensuring equitable cost-sharing.
Municipal Infrastructure
Prioritize the upkeep of all city infrastructure while strategically investing in key capital projects to enhance our community’s resilience and growth.
Public Safety as a Fundamental Responsibility
Invest in protective services—Police, Fire, By-law, and Peace Officers. Further investments are needed for transit safety and social disorder.
Smart & Respectful Growth
Encourage higher densities through redevelopment that respects community character. New suburban developments must demonstrate financial viability transparently.
Intergovernmental Relations
Collaborate with other orders of government where it can, and advocate for Calgary’s interests, regardless of party in power.
Communities First in Action
Watch how Communities First is putting Calgarians’ priorities front and centre with real solutions for a stronger, safer city. While we believe in representing our constituents as individuals, creating a political party ensures we can effectively collaborate and deliver the change Calgary needs.

It was my pleasure as Deputy Mayor to cut the opening ribbon and meet some little Princesses today!
From Bell:
“Dan McLean, a councillor who would rather cut off his right hand than mark a ballot for Gondek, says the mayor is out of touch with most Calgarians.”

Maybe not surprising that the mayor and I disagreed on the Massive Glenmore Landing Redevelopment project but I’m pretty sure the vast majority of the Community agreed with the eight of us who voted against it.
I’m happy to say that the Massive Glenmore Landing Redevelopment Proposal failed at Council today and thanks to the 7 other Councillors that listened to Community and put them First!
I’m deeply disappointed that The City placed an affordable housing provider in an impossible situation, pitting them against the Bowness community.
They were handed a piece of land that included cherished green space and a community playground—a decision that has torn the…
