Calgary, AB – April 4 – Former Alderman John Mar has made the personal decision not to seek election in the 2025 Calgary municipal race. The Communities First team respects his choice and thanks him for his dedication to public service.
“After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek election in 2025. The only thing more important than communities is family,” said Mar. “Serving Calgarians has been one of the greatest honours of my life, and I remain deeply committed to the success of our city. I want to thank my supporters, my friends and colleagues at Communities First, and the incredible communities of Calgary for their trust and encouragement. While I won’t be on the ballot, I will continue to champion the values of strong, community-driven leadership by supporting our team at Communities First in any way I can.”
Mar has a long history of serving Calgarians with integrity and commitment. His public career began in the RCMP as a frontline General Duty Constable. He was elected twice to Calgary City Council, serving on the Calgary Police Commission and elected Chair of Community Protective Services, and was instrumental during the Calgary flood in 2013. Recently, Mar worked closely with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary to create a new Elders Lodge. He’s currently working with Calgary Heritage Housing on several seniors affordable housing projects, as well as numerous other non-profit and charitable and arts organizations.
At this time, Communities First is not seeking a replacement candidate in Ward 6. Our organization remains dedicated to advocating for policies and leadership that put Calgary’s communities first, and our focus remains on supporting strong, community-driven leadership across the city.
