(CALGARY) The Communities First Party is delighted to announce Cornelia Wiebe will be joining them as a candidate for Ward 8 in the upcoming Oct. 20 municipal election.
Cornelia is a long-time Ward 8 resident, small business owner, community advocate, and proud mother. She is an active volunteer with the 17th Avenue Business Improvement Area and a lifelong promoter for a thriving, inclusive, forward-thinking city.
Key issues for Wiebe include responsible City spending and increased Council oversight, public safety and policing, strengthening community engagement, and thoughtful and respectful community development (Wiebe is opposed to blanket rezoning).
Cornelia was very interested in joining the Communities First team, not only because it offers great support during the campaign and after but also because it embraces the independence of elected officials in representing their constituents. “It’s a very different concept than people think of other political parties. Being elected on a platform gives you a good feel about the public mood on those issues, but on others, there’s no pressure, and no party discipline if it is at odds with your constituents. You need to be able to represent your ward, and Communities First offers that.”
Communities First Ward 13 candidate Dan McLean wholeheartedly endorsed Wiebe. “Cornelia is great and just what Ward 8 needs today. She is strong, sensible, and personable and will be an amazing candidate in a ward that can use that after the last four years. I’m genuinely looking forward to working with her on Council.”
Communities First candidate Sonya Sharp agrees. “I really like Cornelia. She’s a successful businesswoman with deep roots in the ward and is passionate about public service. Cornelia is going to be a great councillor, and I’m really looking forward to having her as a colleague.”
Communities First now has seven declared candidates: Cornelia Wiebe, Rob Ward, Andre Chabot, Dan McLean, John Mar, Sonya Sharp and Terry Wong. The party intends to run a full roster of candidates in the October municipal election and will announce more candidates soon.
