CALGARY, AB — Communities First is proud to announce Shane Byciuk as our official candidate for Ward 12 in the upcoming 2025 Calgary municipal election.

A born and raised Calgarian and longtime resident of Cranston, Shane brings over two decades of community service, leadership, and real-world experience in business. He has lived in Ward 12 for the past 18 years and is known across southeast Calgary for his work building stronger, more connected communities.

Shane served as Past President of the Cranston Community Association and was a key member of the South East Calgary Recreation Society, where he worked with The City of Calgary for over five years to bring major recreation projects like the Seton YMCA, Quarry Park YMCA, and Great Plains Arena to life. He had served as Board Chair and Treasurer of Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids, a non-profit that feeds thousands of school children every day.

Shane is also a dedicated youth coach and mentor, having volunteered with Calgary Superleagues Youth Ball Hockey and as Head Coach of the Calgary Fury Provincial Ball Hockey Team.

“I’ve spent most of my life giving back to this city and this ward,” said Byciuk. “Running with Communities First is a natural next step. I believe in local leadership that shows up, listens, and gets things done, not political games or empty promises. Ward 12 deserves a voice at City Hall that’s grounded in the community.”

Shane is a graduate of Mount Royal College and has worked in commercial insurance and risk management for 28 years. He and his wife live in Cranston, have two sons, and are active supporters of local animal rescue organizations. They share their home with two adopted cats and two rescue Chihuahuas.

“Shane has deep roots in the southeast and a clear track record of community leadership,” said Mayoral Candidate Sonya Sharp. “He’s the kind of person who spends his free time coaching kids and rescuing animals. He cares deeply about people and community, and he’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves and do the work. Ward 12 is getting someone with a big heart, a sharp mind, and probably a pocket full of dog treats. I couldn’t be more excited to have him on our team.”

Ward 11 candidate Rob Ward added, “Shane is exactly the kind of independent voice we need more of on Council. Someone who’s proven he can work with people, listen to his community, and follow through. I’m excited to campaign alongside him.”

Shane joins a growing slate of candidates who are stepping up under the Communities First banner to bring common sense, accountability, and local priorities back to City Hall.
